The successful candidate for this role must thrive bringing breaking news and live coverage to audiences in real time as stories are still unfolding, working with assignment editors, reporters, and control room production teams to share news with our audience with urgency. The producer needs to be comfortable producing on the fly while paying close attention to provide context, clarity and accuracy during breaking news. An ideal candidate comes into each day with a deep understanding of the local, national and global news stories that are critical to the day's coverage, and is eager and excited to seek out and pivot to developing stories on a moment's notice.
Responsibilities:
- Produce live newscasts
- Responsible for story selection and editorial content
- Work with line producer to time programs and segments with a good sense of pacing, energy and urgency, filling in as line producer as needed
- Write and customize copy for anchor and reporter voices for top of show, intros, live segments and readers, as well as writing for feature and news packages
- Supervise writing and graphics development
- Copy edit scripts for grammar, syntax and substance (including fact checking)
- Lead and work with national assignment editors, reporters, writers and producers while making editorial and content decisions in accordance with department guidelines and standards
- Effectively communicate with field reporters, tape editors and talent
- Write news stories and newscast teases in a straightforward, active voice, conversational style, with proper grammar and spelling
- Monitor wires and feed sources for updated information
- Respond aggressively to breaking news
- Write banners and quotes during breaking news and live events
- Use all production elements accurately, consistently and creatively
- Exercise sound news judgment with a deep understanding of news standards, rights and clearances and fact-checking practices
- Make quick decisions, and clearly communicate in the control room
- Demonstrate a calm demeanor in high pressure situations, including live control room environments
- Provide guidance & mentor Segment Producers, APs, DAs and other junior team members on writing tone, substance and style
- Work with Management and Line Producers on standards and the editorial direction of language for the anchors, correspondents and on screen graphics
Basic Qualifications:
- At least 5 years experience as a producer in a live-news environment, with a proven track record of exceptional breaking news coverage
- Bachelor's degree
- 3-5 years experience writing copy for network, cable and/or local TV news in a major market
- Must pass comprehensive *** News Digital writing test
- Ability to work early mornings, late nights, weekends and holidays, sometimes on short notice, as coverage and news priorities require, as this is a 24-hour news operation
Additional Qualifications:
- Solid background in journalism and TV, including strong news judgment & critical thinking skills
- Impeccable grammar and spelling with attention to detail
- Command of AP style and broadcast writing
- A passion for breaking news
- Deep understanding of news standards, rights and clearances and fact-checking practices
- Strong communication skills and ability to train and advise associate producers, production assistants and junior staff in writing and editing broadcast copy
- Must be very detail oriented with ability to work and write calmly and efficiently in high stress, intense deadline, live TV environment
- Adept at responding to breaking news, both strategically and in the control room
- Excellent writing and production skills
- Fluency with desktop editing required
- Experience serving as a line producer in a live-news environment and
- Familiarity with ENPS is a plus
This position is a full-time in-office position based in New York City and is not eligible for remote or hybrid work.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
Hiring Salary Range: $88,000.00 - 95,000.00.
The hiring salary range for this position applies to New York, California, Colorado, Washington state, and most other geographies. Starting pay for the successful applicant depends on a variety of job-related factors, including but not limited to geographic location, market demands, experience, training, and education. The benefits available for this position include medical, dental, vision, 401(k) plan, life insurance coverage, disability benefits, tuition assistance program and PTO or, if applicable, as otherwise dictated by the appropriate Collective Bargaining Agreement.
