Emily Carr University of Art + Design invites applications for a full‐time tenure track Assistant Professor position in 3D Computer Animation within the Faculty of Design and Dynamic Media (DDM). Situated on unceded, traditional and ancestral xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Sḵwxwú7mesh Úxwumixw (Squamish), and səḻ ilw̓ətaʔɬ (Tsleil‐Waututh) territories in Vancouver, Canada, Emily Carr University is a world‐renowned learning and research community dedicated to the education of artists and designers.

SUMMARY OF RESPONSIBILITIES
The Bachelor of Media Arts in 3D Computer Animation, situated in the Ian Gillespie Faculty of Design and Dynamic Media (DDM), prepares students to excel as digital art creators, storytellers, and filmmakers. The program provides an aesthetic, technical, conceptual, theoretical and historical understanding of animation. Students are encouraged to develop their artistic voice within a context of artistic expression, formal exploration, and technical experimentation towards creative journeys and careers in various types of production in 3D computer animation, video games, visual effects, AR/VR/MR technologies, and other digital media practices. All majors in the DDM Faculty share values and goals in areas of collaboration, sustainability, interdisciplinarity, critical engagement with technology, new research methods, new approaches to design and media, and the making of imaginative and provocative work.

Candidates should be able to teach students at multiple levels, from Foundation to Graduate Studies, and will be expected to contribute to developing curriculum in an institution that is committed to the interrelation of theory and practice. The successful candidate will join a dynamic team of cross‐disciplinary Dynamic Media faculty from across the Film + Screen Arts and Animation majors. Candidates should be equally fluent in current media and visual culture discourses and studio practices, and in balancing the conceptual, aesthetic and technical demands of the discipline. Faculty are expected to participate in portfolio reviews, upper‐level critiques, provide undergraduate and graduate student supervision, serve on administrative committees, engage in research, and to be an active member of the Emily Carr community.

QUALIFICATIONS
A successful candidate will bring their current knowledge and production expertise in 3D computer animation into the academic environment in order to create fulfilling learning experiences for students. They will have the following qualifications and/or related experience:

● terminal degree or the equivalent combination of education and experience;
● industry experience in 3D Computer Animation production;
● university‐level or post‐secondary teaching experience in a related subject area is preferable;
● demonstrated leadership and collaborative work;
● intercultural competence: the ability to communicate effectively and appropriately with people of various cultures.

Areas of focus may include: 3D animation production, 3D character animation, 3D creation (modeling/rigging/texturing), look development, lighting/rendering, interdisciplinary and experimental 3D animation.

APPLICATION PROCEDURES
Applications should address the candidate’s expertise in the areas of teaching, research, and professional practice; and include:
● a cover letter demonstrating the candidate’s interests in relation to teaching in the 3D Computer Animation program, research/professional practice and service/participation in institutional governance;
● a current curriculum vitae;
● a statement of teaching philosophy;
● evidence of teaching effectiveness (e.g. sample syllabi, assignments, course evaluations);
● a statement of research activities and interests;
● a statement on the candidate’s contributions to diversity, regardless of personal characteristics, describing any professional skills, community experience, or willingness to engage in activities that advance institutional diversity and equity in teaching, research, and service;
● any relevant supporting materials (e.g. links to current demo reels, portfolios, publications, etc.);
● the names and contact information of three referees.

The review of applications will begin on August 23rd, 2021 and will continue until the position has been filled.

Subject to budgetary approval, we anticipate commencement in August 2022. Salary and rank will be commensurate with professional status and teaching experience.
