We are looking for an adept Editorial Page Editor to lead and evolve *** Connecticut *** Group's opinion coverage.
With multiple daily and weekly print publications and websites, we are looking for an experienced editor to spearhead important content across these platforms through a lens of innovation and digital-first approaches.
Do you have the drive and ideas to rethink this vital coverage area and further catapult it into a forward-looking, multi-platform plan? Do you have a finger on the pulse of issues that matter most in Connecticut communities? Can you use audience insights to inform areas of focus? Do you have a network of writers, including diverse contributors, experts in key areas of coverage and local residents who want to be heard? Then this could be the role for you - at a time HCMG is growing rapidly in digital subscriptions.
- We are looking for an editor who can reimagine opinion sections, while continuing to create a platform of strong debate and conversation on issues that resonate with the communities we serve.
- The ideal candidate should have a deep understanding of how opinion content is consumed in digital environments and be able to devise and implement a successful audience strategy, while also continuing to oversee strong print products.
- Experience working or living in Connecticut is not a requirement, but an outside candidate must quickly grasp all the issues impacting the region. The ideal candidate should be an accomplished writer and a deft editor with high-level experience in the opinion space.
- The ability to recruit and deploy a stable of top-level freelance opinion writers is essential as is a talent for convening top decision makers in the community to discuss key issues. As an arbiter of how public officials perform, the Editorial Page Editor should have a passion for monitoring the work of local government officials.
- The candidate should also have a strong understanding of legal and ethical considerations in keeping with high standards upheld in the opinion pages.
HCMG's print publications are based in Fairfield and New Haven counties and beyond, serving readers across platforms, including our sites, app, newsletters, social *** accounts and more for eight daily and 14 weekly newspapers.
Duties and responsibilities:
Develops a diverse team of contributing writers that can be relied upon to weigh in especially on significant news
Knows which stories are happening where and writes or assigns opinion counterparts in a timely manner
Thinks in multiple formats and works with editors, photographers, designers and the audience team members to ensure pieces - from quick-hit op-eds to high-impact enterprise - are presented in a meaningful way
Develops the talents of staffers, offering constructive criticism of their work and guiding them toward an overall strategy this editor will help create
Demonstrates a comfort level with using metrics to inform coverage decisions in real-time and the long-term
Qualifications:
Demonstrated newsroom experience producing high-quality news or enterprise opinion journalism across digital and print platforms
Bachelor's degree or equivalent in journalism, English, communications or related field preferred
Demonstrated success working in a deadline-driven environment
Highly organized and detail-oriented with a proven ability to effectively juggle multiple tasks
Ability to speak a second language such as Spanish a plus
