Developing a Vision:

Work closely with the director to understand and establish the visual style and aesthetic of the film.
Read and dissect the script to determine the various environments, moods, and time periods that need to be portrayed.

Research:

Conduct research to create authentic and era-appropriate designs, especially if the film is set in a specific time period or unique location.

Conceptual Designs:

Create sketches, mood boards, or even 3D renderings to showcase design ideas for sets, props, or specific scenes.

Scouting Locations:

Join the location scouting team to help select or approve shooting locations. Sometimes a real location can be dressed up to fit the narrative, or it can be used as a reference for building sets.

Overseeing Art Department:

Lead and coordinate the art department, which may include set designers, set decorators, prop masters, carpenters, painters, and more.
Collaborate with these teams to ensure the director's vision is brought to life accurately.

Budget Management:

Work within the constraints of the film's budget. This might involve making decisions on which elements to prioritize and where to make cost-effective choices without compromising the overall visual quality.

Building and Dressing Sets:

Oversee the construction of sets. Once built, coordinate with the set decorators to ensure they are dressed appropriately with props, furniture, and other elements.
Collaborating with Other Departments:

Work with the costume designer to ensure that costumes complement the sets and overall production design.
Collaborate with the director of photography (DP) to discuss how the sets and locations will be lit, ensuring that the designs will be showcased in their best light.

On-Set Presence:

Be present on set, especially on the days when new locations or sets are being used, to oversee any last-minute changes or adjustments.
Address any concerns that might arise from the director or other departments about the sets or props.

Wrap-Up:

Once shooting is completed, oversee the process of striking sets, which means taking them down and ensuring everything is returned, recycled, or stored as needed.
Ensure that rented or borrowed items, especially props, are returned in proper condition.

We are assembling a crew for a feature-length digital series to be released on social apps. The script is approximately 70 pages long, and the production will take place in the Los Angeles area (within the 30-mile zone) as a Non-Union project.

The Production Designer's role will involve participating in pre-production (approximately 2 weeks) and production (approximately 1 week). Responsibilities include preparing required props and set dressing during pre-production. On set, the Production Designer will oversee set dressing and props while collaborating with the director to bring the script to life. Fluency in English is required, and proficiency in Mandarin is a plus.

***NOTE*** ALL props and set dressing (which often overlap) have already been designed, acquired, prepped, and sorted neatly into marked bins. The job only requires daily on-set implementation of props/dressing assignment and maintenance. Production will provide a detailed property bible breaking down each day's scenes, props, and set dressing. The props master is considered the department key.

Applicants for the position should have prior experience working in the art department (preferably as a set dresser) on a feature film. Contracted duties for the position will encompass all industry standards for the position, including maintaining orderly custody of set dressing, organizing dressing for the day's shoot, placement on sets as needed, any last-minute adjustments during filming, returning dressing to their storage containers at end of day, etc.

We are filming in Las Vegas, New Mexico, and the greater San Miguel County area, for two and a half weeks in October. Locations are mixed interior and exterior. Production provides three catered meals daily (four on the handful of overnights scheduled) and clean, comfortable accommodations on a most favored nations basis with the film's producers. The production has been designed to allow maximum turnaround in minimal company moves (hotel stays the same through production, base camp moves twice.)

Applicants MUST be New Mexico locals. Please indicate whether you are able to drive to and from the set hotel in Las Vegas and to and from sets. Transportation will be provided to and from hotel and sets upon request.
