The Technical Director will serve a critical function within the live production environment and report directly to the Director of Production. In this role, you will be responsible for the technical execution of the artist’s vision including but not limited to camera positioning and movement, shot composition, and stage blocking. There may be shows that require the Technical Director to serve more than one function, such as both directing and switching or switching and camera control.

You will be expected to maintain a professional attitude at all times and communicate with clients clearly and effectively.

-In-depth knowledge of live video production and streaming as well as the associated technologies.
-In-depth knowledge of NewTek Tricaster Production Systems and hybrid workflows.
-Strong understanding of both SDI-based and IP-based signal flows.
-Ability to create custom experiences based on individual client needs. May require quick turnarounds.
-Ability to adapt depending on production and scheduling changes.
-Experience using production switchers and control surfaces.
-Familiarity with the NewTek Tricaster 2-Stripe panel is a plus.
-Ideally, we are looking for someone with a strong knowledge of command and effect programming as well as source delegation, creation of macros and presets.
Experience with PTZ cameras, PTZ controllers, AV cabling, and troubleshooting various component issues is required.

Job Description

*** Universal has an opening for a Technical Director supporting the News Division.The Technical Director will communicate directions and operate a production switcher to provide a complete program of multi-layered video sources with graphical effects live for air.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Collaborate with the team
Offer technical and creative solutions to create the overall vision for air
Prepare and organize show notes, script, set placement and camera directions
Build and organize switcher effects, snapshots, transitions and specialty wipes
Create and maintain show documentation
Test and prepare systems and equipment for use
Prepare and route video and audio sources
Switch live programs and communicate real-time direction to technical crew
Communicate show element coordination during rehearsal and live production
Work with engineering to ensure equipment is meeting client expectations
Manage multiple tasks simultaneously

Qualifications

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:

Minimum 2 years of experience using production switchers, DVE's, graphics devices, DDR's, electronic routers and patch bays
Minimum 2 years of experience in a live news, entertainment and/or sports production control room environment.
Must be available for all shifts (weekends and holidays); schedule changes with little to no notice; working additional hours beyond schedule as needed

Orchestrate control room set up while simultaneously evaluating and assigning all video inputs taking into consideration timing and video levels.
Collaborates with the Director and Producer to execute the technical and artistic vision for each live game and/or studio production.
Lead the technical portion of the production team during the production set up and coordinate the faxing of their equipment and show elements since their equipment and work passes through the production switcher.
Collaborate with A1, V1, and other production entities needed for the technical fax to verify all video and audio signals are routed correctly and making it to their final destinations.
During a live game and/or studio broadcast productions recall video sources, transitions and effects and route studio monitors as instructed by Show Director. Continuously monitoring all sources used during the production to ensure all video levels look correct and stay in timing which include external feeds (NBATV Arena Link/Satellite/Bonded Cellular/Etc.)
Must be able to handle the pressures of live programming and limited time constraints

COLLABORATION & COMMUNICATION

Work closely with the Technical Operations and Production (BEST) Engineering to identify, troubleshoot, and solve technical problems for Live Location, PCRs and Studio productions. Making sure each problem is resolved to completion.
Collaborates with Production (BEST) Engineering, Technical Operations and Production Management to identify and special order any equipment needed for live game and/or studio broadcast productions.
Effective communicator across teams

JOB DESCRIPTION
The production technician will operate auxiliary equipment as part of *** 32's live news and sports productions. These include but are not limited to robotic cameras, graphics and audio. The ability to excel under pressure in the fast-paced environment of live local news alongside a talented team of producers and directors is required.

Responsibilities include: serve as technical co-pilot for all news and sports programming, experience with studio LED lighting, ETC lighting consoles, Ross studio camera robotics, SSL audio consoles, and Chyron graphics system the ability to mix multiple audio sources during any news or sports program, experience in an automated production control room environment, interaction with talent and guests using excellent interpersonal communication, verbal skills and a professional demeanor is critical.

Other duties may include recording news and programming feeds and tuning in Satellite and Microwave signals, preparing content for broadcast by ingesting and timing *** as well as judging technical quality. Previous experience with or ability to learn Grass Valley iTX master control automation system is also helpful. Knowledge of windows server/client platforms, high performance storage systems and video encoding/delivery systems is a plus.

REQUIREMENTS: Five or more years of television production experience is preferred. Must have strong attention to detail and the ability to proactively isolate and resolve technical problems within network and broadcast systems. You must be a team player that is able to work independently as required. You must have in-depth troubleshooting skills and the ability to perform successfully under pressure are essential. You must be able to multi-task. Previous experience and knowledge in an IT architecture infrastructure is a plus. Must be flexible with schedule including working on weekends and holidays. The ability to sit and/or stand for extended periods of time, climb ladders, and lift up to 50 lbs is needed. Position requires membership in NA *** Local 41 union.
