Job Description

*** Universal has an opening for a Technical Director supporting the News Division.The Technical Director will communicate directions and operate a production switcher to provide a complete program of multi-layered video sources with graphical effects live for air.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Collaborate with the team
Offer technical and creative solutions to create the overall vision for air
Prepare and organize show notes, script, set placement and camera directions
Build and organize switcher effects, snapshots, transitions and specialty wipes
Create and maintain show documentation
Test and prepare systems and equipment for use
Prepare and route video and audio sources
Switch live programs and communicate real-time direction to technical crew
Communicate show element coordination during rehearsal and live production
Work with engineering to ensure equipment is meeting client expectations
Manage multiple tasks simultaneously

Qualifications

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:

Minimum 2 years of experience using production switchers, DVE's, graphics devices, DDR's, electronic routers and patch bays
Minimum 2 years of experience in a live news, entertainment and/or sports production control room environment.
Must be available for all shifts (weekends and holidays); schedule changes with little to no notice; working additional hours beyond schedule as needed

LIVE/TAPED PRODUCTIONS

Set up and operate production switchers and all associated technical equipment in a Production Control Room and/or Live Location environment during live game and/or studio broadcast productions. Orchestrate control room set up while simultaneously evaluating and assigning all video inputs taking into consideration timing and video levels.
Collaborates with the Director and Producer to execute the technical and artistic vision for each live game and/or studio production.
Lead the technical portion of the production team during the production set up and coordinate the faxing of their equipment and show elements since their equipment and work passes through the production switcher.
Collaborate with A1, V1, and other production entities needed for the technical fax to verify all video and audio signals are routed correctly and making it to their final destinations.
During a live game and/or studio broadcast productions recall video sources, transitions and effects and route studio monitors as instructed by Show Director. Continuously monitoring all sources used during the production to ensure all video levels look correct and stay in timing which include external feeds (NBATV Arena Link/Satellite/Bonded Cellular/Etc.)
Must be able to handle the pressures of live programming and limited time constraints

COLLABORATION & COMMUNICATION

Work closely with the Technical Operations and Production (BEST) Engineering to identify, troubleshoot, and solve technical problems for Live Location, PCRs and Studio productions. Making sure each problem is resolved to completion.
Collaborates with Production (BEST) Engineering, Technical Operations and Production Management to identify and special order any equipment needed for live game and/or studio broadcast productions.

In this role, the Broadcast Technician will be responsible for equipment operation to support the *** News Detroit stream and broadcast.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Must have strong technical capability and operate various studio, news, and control room equipment such as studio cameras, wireless mic/IFB systems, teleprompter, audio console, live production automation systems, and bonded cell, microwave, and satellite receive systems.
Make "on the fly" changes, switching shots, camera angles, graphics and more
Monitor video broadcasting equipment and resolve technical issues
Ensure that all equipment is prepared for broadcast
Lead and develop a team and work with developers for building our Live CMS platform for scheduling live events and 24/7 streams!
Facilitate technical operations for breaking news and weather cut-ins; assist the News Department with crawls and bulletins.
Working with Engineering and Operations teams to resolve any active incidents as well as proactively mitigate future platform issues.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Minimum of 5 years experience as a master control or studio production technical director.
Experience with live production systems such as Sony ELC
Experience with newsroom management systems such as iNews
Experience with video production and content management systems such as Grass Valley Stratus
A proven track record of measuring, monitoring, analyzing, and optimizing video streaming performance such as, packet loss, bitrate, compression, bandwidth considerations, and latency on end-user devices
Knowledge of computer networking, broadcast automation, and workflow systems.
Experience working with microwave, satellite, and bonded cell receive systems and transmission vehicles
Strong communication, social, and problem-solving skills.
Demonstrated experience with editing content using non-linear editing systems, audio operation, and camera or graphics experience a plus.
A college diploma or university degree in a related technology or communications field is preferred.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Experience troubleshooting electronic equipment to a component (hardware/software) level, and working with equipment manufacturers to accurate problems.
Order all necessary required parts for repair of all equipment and communicate optimally with vendors, station management, and staff.
Fix and quickly resolve technical problems within a fast-paced on-air environment. Collaborate with system users, technicians, engineers, and other Television Broadcast Maintenance personnel to install, configure, and debug broadcast applications and systems.
Lead server administration, LAN & VLAN configuration, and installation of updates.
Installation, testing, and implementation of projects, terminating HD SDI cables, RF cables, network data, and fiber optic cables.
Work with vendors and manufacturers to research and address support issues.
The ability to work independently at times and collaboratively with other engineering team members is needed.
Ability to work in a team setting.
Must be willing to join the IBEW union.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Bachelor's or equivalent experience, IT certification, or technical school, desirable. Network certifications are a plus.
5-10 years of experience as a television broadcast engineer, or equivalent.
Willingness to work nights, weekends, holidays, and in emergencies, as we are a 24/7 news operation.
Individuals must have an exceptional knowledge of common HD television station equipment.
Video routing systems, Installation, testing, and implementation of projects, terminating HD SDI cables, RF cables, network data, and fiber optic cables.
Ability to read and build AV signal flow diagrams, document project design work, and see projections through to completion.
Knowledge of coordinated receiver decoders IRDs, core devices, edge devices, timing of video and audio systems, and audio and video *** file formats is a necessity.
Knowledge of Evertz frame control via VistaLink or Magnum, Grass Valley Densite frame control, ITX, Harmonic encoders, Nielsen (NACAT), EEG VANC equipment, Linear Acoustics, EAS systems, Grass Valley Stratus/K2 servers.
Working knowledge of AVID, iNews, communications equipment (Bosch/RTS), robotic camera pedestals, Sony studio cameras, and Sony digital production switchers. Core HD/IP, SMPTE 2110 router knowledge is a plus.
Familiarity with IP interface networking, active directory, software deployment utilities such as BigFix or SCCM, and basic Linux/Unix commands.
