Job Description The editorial assistant is an integral part of the REAL SIMPLE print editorial team, assisting in the day-to-day production of the magazine and ensuring a smooth workflow and efficient operations.
The editorial assistant handles administrative duties for the staff, which includes:
Providing administrative, scheduling and expense support for the Editor In Chief;
Overseeing writer contracts, invoices and budget estimates;
Assisting with market work, fact-checking and general office tasks.
In addition, the editorial assistant pitches, researches, writes, assigns, and/or edits content for various sections of the magazine.
This position is a great opportunity for a promising junior editor who is highly motivated and organized, and for whom no task is too great or too small.
II. Essential Job FunctionsWeight %
Accountabilities, Actions and Expected Measurable Results60%Assists editorial staff with various administrative duties: Processes author contracts and contributor invoices for payment and tracks expenditures in issue log; submits expenses; schedules staff meetings; orders supply for staff and gets new employees, independent contractors and temps set up. Assists with project management as needed.
40%Contributes to magazine: Conducts story and market research for editors; compiles, pitches, researches and writes short items. Assists with fact checking.

Education:
Bachelor's degree in Journalism or related field or equivalent training and/or experience.
Experience:
Editorial internship or assistant position at large consumer magazine or web site preferred.
Specific Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills and strong attention to detail.
- Knowledge and demonstrated expertise and enthusiasm in magazine publishing.
- Ability to take initiative, prioritize tasks, work under pressure and meet deadlines.
- Ability to interact responsibly and politely with readers, experts and senior management.
- Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and thrive in a fast-paced environment.
- Strong computer skills. Proficiency with Word, InCopy, Excel, Woodwing and PowerPoint helpful.
