Clearance Manager Production Jobs

The Script Clearance Department is a division of the Intellectual Property Department within the SPE Legal Department. The Department identifies and resolves all legal script clearance issues for SPE's film, television and virtual reality productions as mandated by the company's E&O insurance policy and to prevent legal claims and litigation.

The Script Clearance Manager ("Manager") independently manages multiple television, film and virtual reality projects from pre-production through release to identify, address and resolve all intellectual property issues, including but not limited to issues of copyright, trademark, defamation, right of publicity, right of privacy and product use. The Manager will also directly supervise two Clearance Analysts and a Script Clearance Coordinator. The Manager will support the Director and the *** President in managing the Script Clearance team. The Manager will be expected to provide perspective on the resolution of difficult issues, mentor more junior members of the department and represent the department to high level studio executives. In addition, the Manager will be asked to help set department policy and aid in the structural growth of the department.

Responsibilities :

• Day to day management of all clearance activities across multiple TV and Film productions
• Oversight of three employees' workloads and professional development.
• Customarily and regularly exercise discretion and independent judgment in preparing a script clearance reports, identifying and assessing key legal issues associated with story points, character and business name research, and approving prop/set dressing items created by production art departments - all of which are significant and essential to the creation and distribution of SPE's content.
• Effectively and independently communicate with high level production and studio executives regarding difficult issues that have arisen on a production.
• Assess the legal risks on character names, business names, props, set dressing, and wardrobe items.
• Identify legal risks associated with on-set items such as prop, set dressing and wardrobe. Direct crew members on how such risks should be addressed.
• Research potential defamation, privacy, false association and right of publicity claims associated with a project and present such issues to the VP and EVP of the Intellectual Property Department.
• Understanding of key legal agreements and deal terms, including license agreements, rights agreements, and releases. Negotiate key legal agreements. Oversee drafting of such agreements by a Coordinator. Address high level comments from opposing counsel. Consults with studio attorneys when necessary.
• Knowledgeable of advanced legal principles related to projects based on true stories. Communicates with studio attorneys, outside counsel, studio executives, producers, and writers to identify legal problems and suggest and implement solutions.
• Manage relationship with post-production, publicity and marketing and other parts of the studio as it relates to clearance issues on the project.
• Aid in fact discovery in the event of a claim.
• Supervises directs reports workload and development.
• Makes suggestions and recommendations as to the hiring, advancement, promotion, or corrective performance plans of department personnel.

Requirements:

• 8-10 years of script clearance experience
• 8-10 years of experience in the entertainment industry
• 8-10 years of experience managing a team
• Bachelor's degree preferred

Knowledge:

• Strong understanding of US and worldwide copyright laws and public domain criteria.
• Expertise and understanding of complex legal concepts such fair use, right of publicity, defamation, and false association.
• Proficient in using and analyzing information found in US Trademark, Hoovers, and **** databases.
• Working knowledge of Entertainment Guild terms and requirements with regards to clip re-use and talent clearances.

The Role
We are looking for a dynamic candidate with music production or in-house studio experience to act as a Music Production Coordinator for our live-action and anime productions in Japan. This role will be reporting to the Manager, Music Production - Japan and will partner with them to provide support on the implementation of cross-functional music production solutions that will support our productions and overall slate growth across *** -branded Japanese live-action and anime titles. If you are someone with a passion for both the creative development and execution of music for content and who thrives in a collaborative, entrepreneurial, and innovative environment, this role may be for you. Key Responsibilities

• Read and break down incoming scripts for music needs, flagging upcoming visual vocals/on cameras, and potential licensing issues (challenging song approvals, grand rights, etc.)
• Liaise with Composer agents//music producers during the personnel hiring process, ensuring key dates, project information, and watermarked materials are distributed. Help field project inquiries as needed
• Distribute onboarding materials to partners, music supervisors and composers
• Make appropriate introductions *** ween production and music crew, also ensuring that the music team receives scripts and cuts from production
• Attend regular check-ins with music supervisors/composers, taking relevant notes and connecting with the Music manager on action items
• Review cuts, flagging unaddressed music needs/clearance issues as they arise in conjunction with the music supervisor, composer, production, post, etc.
• Maintain consistent communication *** ween Music Legal Team/Music Licensing partners regarding relevant Music Production updates/action items
• Attend show-specific/check-ins and provide music updates to the internal title management team

Experience & Skills

• Experience: 5 years either as a music director, producer, or supervisor at a studio. Has in-territory experience in music production ideally for live-action features, series and anime.
• This role will have deep creative relationships with labels, publishers, managers, agents, composers, music supervisors, etc. as well as an internal content team and have a vast understanding of music supervision or worked in-house at a studio as a music producer.
• This role will be a liasion *** ween internal cross-functional teams and external partners, and be responsible for ensuring the internal cross-functional teams understand the music production workflow.
• Collaborate with the external music director, producer, or supervisor to oversee and manage the music production objectives/workflow for the project.
• Advise/support on-camera performances in collaboration with Music team - including clearance, pre-records, on-set production and post production requirements
• Work with music editor and post supervisor during temp dub to make sure music is ready for preview/test screening.
• Support post supervisor, music editor and composer to develop a music post schedule that coincides with post timeline and adhere to said schedule and music milestones
• Coordinate music notes and approval process *** ween the studio, composer, director and producers by organizing score review sessions after locked picture
• Frequently check in with the composer, music director, producer, or supervisor on scheduling, booking and supervising scoring sessions and live recordings to ensure they are running on time and on budget
• Align with the music team as they are in the process of existing song selection as it relates to studio approvals and budget.
• Thrive in a fast-paced environment, are very curious and have an entrepreneurial mindset.
• Native Level Fluency in Japanese is required. Business-level English is a plus.

The Research Specialist is responsible for servicing the research needs of the Script Clearance Department. Research is performed as part of pre-production and production to ensure that all names, addresses, businesses, etc are clear to use. Additionally, research is done to ensure accuracy of factual information and references included in projects, as well as fact checking true stories and docudramas.

Responsibilities:

• Research proposed character names by occupation, locale, and other identifying traits.
• Search multiple online databases to review any business names, brand names, trade names, trademarks, titles, slogans or other proprietary items.
• Ensure that no real-world co *** icts exist for scripted addresses, internet sites and other proprietary information.

• Scan newspaper and magazine articles to pick up important current issues and lawsuits; and

• Identify research resources, to determine research variations and to pursue further leads and aspects of investigation.

• Discuss results/findings with the Research Manager to ensure that the request was fully assessed and that the research is comprehensive before determination is made regarding which items can or cannot be used by production, based on co *** icts or similarities that exist. The Script Clearance Department relies heavily on the independent judgment of the Researcher.
• Communicate clearly and effectively wit other members of the Script Clearance Department.
• Research Contact Information for Rights Holders.
• Fact check required information for various projects. Using Westlaw and other news databases to substantiate in previously published sources depictions of (or references to) real people/companies that might be actionable. Fact-based or fact-inspired projects are particularly challenging in this regard when depictions must be factually accurate. In-depth research with full understanding of the legal issues is required for fact-based projects.
• Reviewing and Verifying Research Information - when the Research Specialist completes a research assignment, they will review the results with the Research Manager in order to ensure all sources checked, the results from each source, and relevant backup information (database printouts)

Requirements:

• 3+ years of clearance and/or motion picture/TV production experience.
• Previous experience as a Script Clearance Coordinator and Script Clearance Researcher is preferred.
• Must work effectively and thrive in a team environment. Good interpersonal skills are required.
• Strong research and computer skills.
• Must be detail-oriented and well-organized.
• Ability to prioritize time-sensitive work when given a high volume of responsibility from multiple sources.
• Must enjoy working in a fast paced, dynamic environment.
• Excellent communication skills (written and verbal) as well as a strong understanding of the rules of confidentiality.
• College graduate or equivalent preferred. with previous clearance and/or motion picture/TV production experience. Previous experience as a Script Clearance Coordinator and Script Clearance Researcher is preferred.

Qualifications & Experience...

• Technically proficient lawyer - needs to have excellent understanding of contract and *** law and excellent drafting skills.
• Qualified lawyer required with at least 4+ years PQE or equivalent negotiating experience working in business affairs in the entertainment industry.
• Extensive contacts with programme producers, distributors and broadcasters.
• Ability to work autonomously on complex deals and to own key internal commercial relationships.

The Manager/Senior Manager, Direct to Consumer Legal, EMEA is responsible for all legal aspects of our fast-paced and ever-growing direct-to-consumer business.

Based in London, this position will form part of the Direct to Consumer and Streaming (D2C) EMEA Legal team. The role reports to the D2C Regional Legal Lead for EMEA. The D2C Legal team (with lawyers based in the US and the UK) has an international remit and provides comprehensive and proactive legal support to *** Discovery's global digital businesses: Max and discovery+ (including *** Sport). Digital is a core growth area and a key priority for *** Discovery as it continues to expand its portfolio of direct-to-consumer SVOD, AVOD and digital content services, making it a dynamic and exciting environment to work in.

Key Responsibilities:

Consumer and Marketing

• Work closely with key stakeholders on the global rollout of new digital product launches.
• Provide support across the consumer lifecycle/experience, including advising on product development, buyflows, subscription models and pricing, promotions, customer support and complaints.
• Advising on a wide range of consumer, regulatory and marketing law issues.
• Advertising, marketing and promotional campaign clearance and events for both the D2C services and content
• Liaising with the global compliance teams to ensure product compliance across all markets.
• A proven track record in product development and marketing are key to the role.

Commercial Agreements

• Draft, negotiate and advise on a wide range of commercial agreements, including in respect of (without limitation) promotional partnerships, events, consultancy services, i *** uencers, sponsorships, marketing, creative agencies, advertising and confidentiality.
• Work closely with our international legal team to advise on digital distribution agreements with key affiliate and global partners, including content distribution agreements with OTT platform providers and app stores.
• Draft, negotiate and advise on Ad Tech agreements including SSP, DSP and DMP agreements.

General Responsibilities

• Create and update relevant policies and template agreements.
• Work closely with the regional legal teams globally to navigate legal restrictions, improve efficiencies, and implement best practices.
• Liaise with the Finance, Tax, Data Protection, Information Security, Procurement, Risk Management, Ethics and Compliance and Employment teams as appropriate

Capabilities:

Skills & Experience

• A technically very proficient lawyer
• An excellent understanding of product development, consumer law and marketing experience essential
• Experience working in a digital *** , technology and/or broadcast *** company would be a key advantage
• Good business and legal judgment and a flexible and creative approach
• Must be a UK-qualified lawyer or common law equivalent with approximately 3-5 years post-qualification experience (PQE is given as a guide only, this will not be a determining factor of suitability and applicants of other levels of PQE may apply) and excellent academics. Training and experience at a top City law firm is an advantage.
• Good commercial knowledge and an ability to 'think outside the box' is essential - recognising the potential impact on other areas of *** Discovery's business or revenue streams, involving relevant stakeholders as appropriate.
• Negotiation skills must be proven - to deliver both proper legal protection to company and excellent commercial results.
• Strong interpersonal skills, including the ability to work effectively within a globally distributed team and fast-paced business environment. Previous experience working with global stakeholders would be an advantage.
• Clear and concise communicator (both orally and written) - the ability to present and distil legally complex issues into legally compliant but practical and commercial solutions, in a way that engages key stakeholders.
