Job Summary/Description:
WMC, Action News 5 in Memphis, TN is looking for a dynamic Assistant News Director to help manage the day-to-day operations of the newsroom. The successful candidate will bring an established record of strong news judgment and management skills to lead and guide news coverage across all of WMC, and Action News 5's content platforms. The Assistant News Director will work closely with the News Director on special projects planning and leading an award-winning, experienced team in a fast-paced news environment.
Duties/Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Work closely with reporters, multi- *** journalists, broadcast and digital producers, photojournalists as well as anchors to create compelling news content for all of WMC Action News 5 newscasts and digital platforms
- Guide and lead daily editorial meetings
- Develop daily coverage plans and special content plans
- Work with news managers and develop our long-term planning calendar and ops plans
- Able to make split-second decisions and lead the news team during breaking news events
- Administrative duties such as weekly scheduling, vacation schedule, and onboarding new employees
- Identify development needs, then assist in training and providing coaching and mentoring
- General knowledge of newsroom systems and equipment
- Additional responsibilities as assigned by the News Director
Qualifications/Requirements:
- Newsroom management experience preferred
- Strong management, communication, and people skills required to supervise and interact daily with staff
- Ability to multi-task in high-stress situations
- Strong organizational skills
- Must be able to work flexible hours and adapt to schedule changes
- Detail-oriented with strong written and verbal communication skills
