Sophia Martin

Currently teaching math, special education, and design thinking in a Hawaiian middle school. I'll be producing a video with my design thinking class this semester, as well as teaching them screenwriting! But while I still love teaching, I am ready to start a new chapter. Teaching has built my skills in collaboration, conflict resolution, problem solving, research, curriculum development, and grant writing. I am resilient and positive: the kind of person who gets along with everyone and makes friends easily. I have encountered more than one irate parent and I have a solid record of diffusing those situations and sending them on their way feeling heard and satisfied, even if we were unable to grant the exact thing they wanted. I have produced several plays and videos over the years and thrive in high pressure situations that require above average organization and management skills. I am honest and ethical. I don't play games.

Teacher at the alternative high school for the district, which was project-based. The school brought in professional filmmaker Christina Schmidlin who was funded through several grants to create educational videos with high school and middle school students. We collaborated on a total of five videos. I ran the class that involved the students, educating them on film production. We wrote scripts, filmed in a studio and on location, taught the students lighting and sound as well as cinematography. I also collaborated on grants with Schmidlin and wrote other grants for the school. In addition to the media studies class I also taught English, social studies, and independent living skills from 2010 to 2018.
