I'm writing to recommend an immensely talented young visual journalist/storyteller, Emma Elbuzedi. I worked closely with Emma four years ago as the adviser for her documentary master's film at Columbia Graduate School of Journalism, "Too Good to Die, ...MORE...
" about a Syrian teenager who suddenly lands in a posh school in a Philadelphia suburb after his father, a doctor, is brutally murdered by the regime. Emma did the film completely on her own - shooting, taking sound, editing (most students work in teams, but her partner was called away to a job before starting on the project) - and she won first place for all three of the student awards.
I could see from the start that Emma had a good instinct for picking strong characters, coupled with a rare gift for drawing them out. She also has an impressive depth of knowledge about global issues, and excellent international contacts, many gleaned through her years of living, studying and working abroad. Emma deftly balances journalism and filmmaking; she is a dogged and careful reporter who is constantly on the quest for strong images and visual metaphors to powerfully convey her story. She is also incredibly hardworking, resourceful, and she has a great sense of humor that finds its way into her pieces - something that is very rare.
Since then I have greatly enjoyed seeing Emma develop her talents at BuzzFeed, where she honed an ability to create lighter, humorous pieces. Once again, her rapport with her subjects was evident in these pieces, and I am impressed by her nimble touch in the realm of popular culture.
Having worked with dozens of talented young people over the years (I was Series and Executive Producer of PBS's international doc series "Wide Angle" for eight years, and Co-creator and Executive Producer of PBS's 5-part "Women, War & Peace" series), I can say that Emma is a standout and I recommend her to you with highest praise.
