Casa Loma, Toronto, CANADA — Live/Special Event Details

In 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020 and 2021 I production designed and managed a live experience multimedia show in Toronto at a premiere event venue called Casa Loma. (3.5 months in 2016 because it was the initial run of the show and required design and installation of new electrical and W-DMX infrastructure to support the show.) The show covers a 2-acre site adjacent to a 65,000 square foot Heritage building, including an 800-foot-long tunnel and a separate 20,000 square foot stables complex, which are open to the public all day and receive between 2,000 and 3,000 patrons per day. In addition to hosting live music, corporate events, film and television shoots and weddings in the evenings and sometimes during the day. My 2016 main challenge was to initially build out the infrastructure to support the event. In 2017 the owners added a complete Haunted House of which I oversaw the assembly and upgraded technology where required. PROJECTION - 4 x Barco 20K projectors in towers projection mapping the south side of the building, 1 x BARCO 20K Lumen projector outside with custom structure, 3 x CHRISTIE 6K LUMEN projectors in custom IP rated cases, 20 x 3.5K Lumen HD LASER projectors, 8 providing content to rear projection screens in the forest zones all controlled by a Vioso Wings Show Control system. (Built by me). There are 6 of the 3.5K Lumen projectors lofting imagery on the garden wall with the remaining units in various locations within the tunnel and another 30 Pico LED projectors in the 800' long tunnel. LASERS -60 plus 300Mmw LASERs (Various colours), 8 x 5.5 watt RGB, 2 x 14 watt RGB, and 2 x 30 watt Watt RGB LASERs. LIGHTING - 200 x RGBA-W LED par type that are IP65 with W-DMX, 42 LED KLING NET LED BARS, in the outside forest, 150 Gantom LED IP65 DMX controllable spots both in the tunnel and the lower gardens, 20 x UV PAR type, 50 x ADJ superspots, 60 ADJ RGB Spots, in various event zones. EFFECTS - 6 Antari DNG-200 foggers (outside with custom covers and housing), 20 Antari FT-100 (and generic) foggers numerous smaller hazers, 60 “rock” IP65 speakers in 8 zones (70 volt) in the forest, 40 powered speakers for 8 zones in the tunnel. This would be populated with more than 100 actors in full costume, high aerialist acts and more than 35 pneumatic animatronic devices. AUDIO – 96 ROCK type IP rated 70volt speakers in the lower gardens and terrace in 16 zones, 12 x QSC K10 and K12 powered pa speakers, 36 additional 8 OHM speakers at various locations in the tunnel. HAUNTED HOUSE - The Haunted House, added in 2017, is an approximately 2400 square feet prefabricated maze. There were some 20 animatronic devices all pneumatically powered for which we had to design and install 4 x 80-gallon compressors (plus 12 accumulators) feeding a mainline that connected all of the animatronics together which was supplemented in 2018 by a large diesel compressor. Each animatronic device had an individual “Boo Box” which was programmed to a specific set of tasks. That includes triggering audio, lighting, foggers etc. After the event’s 2017 wrap I designed new and improved animatronics to replace and rebuild the units that required work. For the 2018 event I also designed and produced the projection mapping content to the specification of the creative director. That mapping work and other references can be found at the links below. In 2020 we moved the MIRROR MAZE from the Glass Pavilion into the Haunted House. In 2021 The Mirror Maze was enhanced by 8 x 3 WATT LASERS, 2 FOG machines and 4 x 3D HOLOFAN devices.
