Assistant Editor

The Beaumont Enterprise seeks an enthusiastic and versatile Assistant Editor to serve in the No. 2 leadership position in its newsroom. The right candidate will serve as the most senior reporter in the newsroom, while also participating in digital efforts and filling in for the editor when necessary.

The Assistant Editor's main duty will be to work with the editor to plan and execute in-depth coverage. But they also many edit stories, handle breaking news and help oversee a daily news operation that produces a daily paper, daily and weekly email newsletters, special sections and a website that sees hundreds of thousands of visits each month.

The ideal candidate will be a leader and a planner who knows how to strategize and execute a wide variety of content - from in-depth features to concise breaking news. The assistant editor also oversees the newsroom when the editor is away, including some weekend and evening editing duties.

Responsibilities can include (but are not limited to):

Write in-depth news articles on a variety of topics that show an understanding of our community and resonate with our readers.
Demonstrate sound editorial judgment, including an understanding of institutional guidelines on ethics, tone and subject matter.
Edit stories for clarity, accuracy, readability, content, style and grammar for the daily newspaper, website and magazines. When necessary, provide feedback to reporters and make suggestions on sources or additional facts needed for stories.

This position is integral to all parts of the newsgathering process and should set the tone for aggressively covering breaking news, consistently following up on stories as they develop, and constantly asking, "What voices have we not heard?"

The successful candidate will bring a news hound sensibility, collaborative spirit and be an excellent problem-solver, impeccably organized, and comfortable multitasking, and prioritizing. It is an always-on demanding role, so a calm character under pressure and tight deadlines is also necessary.

This role reports to the news director.

Responsibilities:

Oversees daily coverage decisions and reporter assignments to be competitive across platforms and to be on brand with goal of owning the big story daily.
In charge of newsroom readiness to respond to breaking news and weather events
Supervises and schedules reporters and assignment editors.
Oversees news planning process.
Evaluates, recruits, and onboards new reporter and desk hires.
Leads morning and afternoon editorial meetings
Uses daily and long-term audience insights to aid in content choices
Ensures competitive content across dayparts, newscasts, and platforms
Works closely with reporters and assignment desk on future assignments
Monthly check-ins and mentoring of direct reports to help reporter and assignment editors hone skills in developing sources and acting on tips
Daily reporter script review
Collaborates on newsroom projects, goals, and initiatives as necessary
Creates, communicates, and executes big story and breaking news coverage
Generates new angles and sidebar stories from lead stories
Enforces assignment desk procedures to make sure newsroom stays on top of coverage opportunities

Requirements:

A minimum of 6 years of journalism experience with an emphasis on and proven record of accomplishment of managing teams during breaking news and at least 3 years of management experience
Knowledge of best practices of assignment desk operations
Strong editorial and news judgment
Impeccable organizational skills with a keen eye for detail
Both a team player and a team leader
Effective people and communication skills
Familiarity with Atlanta or a reason to relocate here, strongly preferred

Job Description

*** U Local is looking for an experienced Spanish-language digital managing editor to lead the evening content center team. The right candidate is a meticulous writer/editor and has experience managing people and coaching. This job entails working under pressure during breaking news situations without breaking a sweat. The Evening Managing Editorwill manage an experienced staff augmenting the work of the 24 news departments in our local stations, as well as coach and help our local editors from those same stations.

Responsibilities:

Work the evening shift (as well as some holidays)
Supervise and mentor evening editorial staff.
Lead evening editorial meetings.
Manage content creation and editorial strategy in the evening.
Maintain *** U Local legal and standards practices as it relates to the content created.
Create original articles, videos and slideshows; gather original content from all local TV station's newsrooms and curate a wide variety of stories from other sources, including blogs, newspapers, online publications and magazines.
Maintain homepage carrousels and oversee the quality of main pages of the websites.
Ensure the voice, tone and mix of content fits with the overall editorial strategy created by *** U Local
Collaborate in special projects such as features sections and sites' verticals.
Work and maintain good relationships with local digital teams, as well as producers, and content experts at the local TV stations.
Keep an updated directory of the local station's assignment desks and work to maintain good relationships and an open communication with them, to ensure local breaking evening news coverage.
Take direction from the VP or Sr Director of Multiplatform Content to get the most effective content online and collaborate with content centers in other local markets to share stories and resources across all *** and *** 's local websites.

Qualifications
