Job Description
*** U Boston *** Center is hiring for a Senior IT Specialist with experience in broadcast technology. This engineer will be part of the team that supports content creation, production, and distribution across multiple businesses and their viewing platforms; television, internet, mobile and OTT. This role will provide the opportunity to design, implement, and support cutting edge broadcast solutions.
Responsible for IT systems, newsroom IT systems, desktop support, broadcast equipment and facility maintenance, live field trucks and transmitter maintenance, coupled with project initiatives for *** Boston, *** Boston, NECN and *** Sports Boston.
- Work as a member of the station's engineering team and the division's technology team to implement state of the art technical facilities at a competitive television station. Brainstorm and develop, with the assistance of other team members, new solutions for news operations and television transmissions. Interface with news and Production Operations employees to troubleshoot time-critical applications and systems
- Evaluate and optimize workflows related to broadcast systems including linear and IP fabric for video infrastructures, virtualized Windows & Linux environments, encode / decode platforms, newsgathering tools, NLE, *** Asset Management systems, distribution / transmission systems, and other workflow tools.
- Maintain the technical integrity of the Boston *** Center operating facilities including but not limited to the control room, *** , transmission, newsgathering, and production equipment. Respond to facility outages and perform basic maintenance on building systems, on-air systems and ethernet, fiber networks and systems. Install, repair and maintain digital and high-definition broadcast equipment as well as computer and IT equipment associated with the operation and the broadcast signals and office functions of the station. Support IT manager with IT projects and maintenance on all company IT systems.
- Respond to employees' requests regarding tools and resources they need for their job. Determine solutions through process improvements with existing technology or purchasing new equipment. Research equipment and determine whether it appropriately supports our technical facility, improves the operation, streamlines a process or reduces errors. Identify solutions where new equipment may result in savings for the company. Examine all solutions to ensure implementation - process improvement or new equipment - is cost efficient.
- Implement, support and evaluate popular applications used by Mac and PC environments. Develop, prepare and install computers, software and server solutions as required. Provide documentation and training for newly implemented systems to end-users, where appropriate. Work closely with management to prioritize and balance business goals with information system requirements and resources. Support network users in daily computer software and hardware needs. Support current wireless environment in newsroom, sales and administration with strong ability to troubleshoot wireless networks. Troubleshoot and repair advanced Ethernet and fiber networks and systems including corporate LANs, high-speed routers, file-shares, mobile devices, laptops, desktops, etc.
Qualifications
Basic Qualifications:
- Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Broadcast Engineering, or similar; ORminimum of 5years of similarexperience.
- Military experience in broadcasting / television in lieu of degree.
- Experience in supporting large scale systems to support business needs within IT space
Desired Qualifications:
- Experience supporting a major market or network News operation
- Proficient with IT routers, switches, firewalls, and port management applications
- Proficient in A/V file transcoding, data archiving processes and video compression technologies & standards.
- Hands on experience with support of non-linear edit systems such as Premiere, FCP, Edius.
- Demonstrated knowledge of *** over managed IP networks and protocols.
- Knowledge and experience with hardware virtualization
- Knowledge of *** workflow tools and production systems such as Vantage, Dalet, Ross Overdrive or similar.
- Knowledge of distribution systems including RF, streaming and satellite.
- Knowledge of newsgathering and communications systems
- Strong ability to read and generate system documentation (Visio, ACAD).
- Positive work ethic, ability to work well in groups to execute projects on time and on budget while meeting customer expectations.
- Ability to communicate and interact effectively with diverse audiences across different departments, ranging from non-technical clients to technical professionals and operations staff.
- Must be able to process large amounts of information, analyze this information and make sound decisions, sometimes under intense deadline pressure.
- Knowledge of standard engineering processes such as change control and agile development concepts.
- Must be keen to learn and develop new skills
- Ability to work on own initiative
- Excellent organization, collaboration, and communication skills.
- Knowledge and experience with setup, testing and documentation of proof-of-concept systems
- Must possess strong multitasking skills and the ability to prioritize tasks
- Bilingual preferred.
